THANK YOU from Operation Surf

Operation Surf 2015 Pic Paddle out

Picture Bo

I just wanted to thank you again so much for joining forces with the Operation Surf Crew. Thank you so much for sponsoring the soldiers and your beyond generous contribution. We really appreciated everyone’s support and time volunteering as well as allowing us to come to the meetings. We can’t thank you all enough for everything you have done.

The transformations that these men and women had as the week went on was incredible. Many of them were very withdrawn and quiet the first night we all met. By the end of day 1, everyone knew everyone, everyone was cheering each others on, talking about their first waves, just incredible. We had one soldier Bo, who recently lost his legs above the knee. He has over 100 surgeries. This was the first time he had even seen the ocean. He was surfing like a pro by the end of the week. Col. Danny McKnight paid us a special visit and provided the heroes signed books. We had an outpour of local support when the troops were brought in on the first day by 50 freedom riders motorcycle club, people were lining the streets with American flags, the fire department saluted them at the hotel with their ladder and water truck and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office escorted them here. We also had helicopter coverage and quite a bit of news media.

By the end of the week, 2 soldiers want to move to our area and start participating in planning the event and helping other soldiers. Two of them were on suicide watch prior to the event and told us afterwards they thought they had nothing to live for until this and it has changed their lives. One of our local soldiers was asked to submit her resume for 2 jobs. Each of our 12 soldiers mentioned many times how much this has changed their life. We all bonded so much and had so much fun. This even was absolutely amazing.

I think we will have an incredible amount of growth for next year’s event and I wanted to thank you all so much for jumping onboard and helping us meet our budget this year. You were critical to making this happen. We almost didn’t make the cut in January and your contribution gave us a boost in funding that we needed.  We couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out and this event has greatly changed all of our lives.
